Victoria Park in 2024 - Between Seasons
w/e 08 September 2024

All of this week's pictures were taken with a Nikon D3300 or a Galaxy S20 Mobile Phone.

A month by month look at Ilkeston's Victoria Park in 2024 - Part 09 September.

Between Seasons

Is it the end of summer or the beginning of autumn? The green leaves on the trees tell us one thing but those on the ground are saying something else. Meteorological summer ended on August 31st but astronomical summer doesn't end until September 22nd so actually we're in the intermediate period between the two.
Car Park

For our walk through the park this month we started on Drummond Road and accessed the park near the children's play area via the car park. The number of vehicles parked suggested the play area would be busy with parents supervising their children in the last few days before schools reconvene but that was not the case. With charges recently being increased on the town centre car parks and this one being free of charge, I'll let you make you own deductions.

Play Area

Only a very few children were in the play area but the late summer foliage made for an attractive setting.
Raised Beds

Less attractive were the weed filled raised beds. Whilst I can sympathise with the objectives of "Rewilding Erewash" surely parks and public gardens deserve better than this.
Wildflowers

I've no objection to the creation of wildflower beds though, that can add some much needed colour to the surroundings.
Patterns

The central area of the park is also devoid of colour - apart from green - where the newly planted grass in the former flower beds is creating patterns with the older turf.
Hint Of Autumn

At least one tree in the central area is already showing tinges of its autumn colours.
Long Border Colour

We did find some colour in the long border and a welcome sight it was too.
Purple Leaved Plum

And the purple leaved plum tree on the Bristol Road side of the park was living up to its name.
Red Berries

Before leaving the park we sought out a Rowan tree we had passed earlier near Drummond Road. Also know as a Mountain Ash, it was covered with red berries. Next month we expect the autumn colours to be everywhere in the park and just hope we're not disappointed. And talking of disappointment, this is the first month this year, we haven't seen any dogs in the park! Now that is unusual.
