Victoria Park in 2024 - Panels &
Grass
w/e 07 July 2024
All of this week's
pictures were taken with a Nikon D3300.

A month by month look at Ilkeston's
Victoria Park in 2024 - Part 07 July.

If you've been following this monthly series you will already
be aware that we usually make the acquaintance of at least one
canine and this time our dog encounter was with Maple.
|

Before bumping into Maple, we had entered the park at the Drummond
Road/Bristol Road entrance observing the shrubs and patch of
bare earth where flowers were normally to be seen. It would appear
that budget restrictions, not only here but all through the borough,
have resulted in a drastic reduction in flower displays. Presumably,
as in other locations, grass seed will be sown here if it has
not already been so.
|

More shrubs line each side of the pergola but these are not new
as they have been there for a long time.
|

We walked past the pergola and the bandstand noting the trees
are now in full leaf and it was just beyond here that we met
Maple and her owner.
|

We walked a little way with them passing the panel giving lots
of historical information about the park and turned to walk by
the empty flower beds in the central area. These have been levelled
and again it looks as though the whole area will soon be grass
covered.
|

We parted company with Maple when we stopped to look at the carpet
bed and the adjacent panel.

The display is to celebrate 100 years of the Bowling Club
and the panel says that there was a "grand opening ceremony
for the new bandstand, bowling green and bowls pavilion"
on August 1st 1923. The panel also includes two photos from the
opening.
|

Another panel at the end of the Long Border identifies many of
the plants in the border ....
|

.... but it's not always easy to identity them, at least to my
untrained eye, from the pictures on the panel.
|

Before leaving the park we made a short detour to view the bed
the we said we'd keep an eye on when it looked ready for planting
back in May. Well now it is obvious that it was planted as it
is full of wildflowers.
