Part 04 - The Summit

Considering much of the UK was enjoying (enduring) the third heatwave of the summer, the weather in Llandudno remained dull and decidedly cool as we continued to the summit of the Great Orme on the second afternoon of our holiday in North Wales.

Mini-Golf

On the way to the top from the car park and wildflower garden, we passed a mini-golf course built into the contours of the hillside.
Little Orme

After our warming drink in the summit cafe I found a rocky outcrop which is one of the highest natural points on the Great Orme and carefully balancing on it, got a decent view of the Little Orme on the other side of Llandudno Bay.
Cable Car

The same vantage point was adjacent to the cable car terminus.
Across Conwy Bay

Crossing to the other side of the summit cafe and gift shop complex, we could peer across Conwy Bay through the murky conditions. Our base for the holiday was somewhere over there.
School Parties

Despite the conditions parties of schoolchildren, probably on end of term outings, were chatting noisily and obviously enjoying themselves.
Great Orme Tramway

As well as road and cable car access to the summit there is also the alternative means or reaching the top with the famous Great Orme Tramway.

Departing Tram

As we watched one of the trams departing the depot and another car arriving, we spotted a pattern in the form of a cross on the hillside opposite.
Hillside Stones

A closer look showed that names had also be formed by stones placed on the grassland. These stones probably came from the old quarry nearby, one of several on the Great Orme.
Parallel Tracks

As we made our way back down from the Great Orme the road at times ran parallel to the tram tracks.
Llandudno

It was quite steep in parts but enabled some good views of Llandudno seafront.

Conwy Castle

As we made our way back to base we caught a glimpse, through the gloom and across the River Conwy, of the castle at Conwy. The following day we would return to the town and the weather then, and for the rest of our holiday, was much better.
