Ilkeston - Good Friday Witness
w/e 31 March 2024
All of this week's
pictures were taken with a Nikon D3300
Easter came early this year - as did the April showers! We were
caught in one on the last Friday in March as we made our way
to the gathering of Christians from local churches in St Mary's
Church for the annual Good Friday Walk of Witness.
|
Soon after 10:30 those present made their way outside to form
procession on the Market Place. The rain had stopped and the
sunshine briefly broke through the wintry sky to reflect off
the wet ground.
|
The procession then began its silent walk into the Lower Market
Place.
|
At a steady pace the walkers continued down Bath Street where
a security vehicle, seeing the approaching procession, made a
three point turn and went the wrong way down the one-way street.
The silence of the walkers was broken by loud shouts of "One
way!" from pedestrians further down Bath Street.
|
Unperturbed the walkers proceeded with their slow walk and were
joined by more people as they walked by.
|
They had not gone much further when another vehicle, a red van,
came up the street closely followed by a large lorry with flashing
lights.
|
The numerous "Pedestrian Zone" signs have little effect
and the walkers were forced to walk to one side to allow the
vehicles through.
|
On reaching Wilmot Street the front of the procession turned
in whilst the remainder of the crocodile stretched back a good
way up Bath Street.
|
The walkers then entered St Andrew's Methodist Church on Wilmot
Street.
|
Once they had all settled inside, the Good
Friday morning service was held.
